As a part of ongoing WWDC proceedings, Apple has handed out the 2010 Apple Design Awards. The candidates were selected mainly on the basis of nominations from developers, although Apple reserved the right to pick its own choices. Winners were rated on a combination of design, innovation, performance and technology adoption.
Panasonic at InfoComm introduced the world's largest 4K HD 3D professional plasma display, the TH-152UX1. The display has a 4096x2160 resolution, which is equivalent to nine 50-inch screens. The aspect ratio is 17:9, and the set is mostly meant for use in work such as 3D CAD work, health care, although it's also seen as being useful for ultra-luxury home theaters.
EA Mobile has announced a new iPhone version of Risk, the war strategy game. Originally created as a board game, Risk pins players against each other in a quest for world domination. Players are given their own armies to defend and fortify the land, attack enemies, and claim territories.
Scosche and CAZE have launched new cases for the iPhone 4. Scosche has eight new cases and three new screen protectors. The kickBACK g4 features a kickstand for media viewing and a glossy polycarbonate exterior with a flexible rubber interior in black, grey and white with grey modeling.
Gazelle, an electronics reCommerce service, has launched a mobile site that allows customers to set up an iPhone sale directly from the handset. In preparation for customers upgrading to the iPhone 4, Gazelle is offering cash for iPhone 2G, 3G and 3GS models.
The PSP Go was an experiment to see where the mobile gaming industry was going, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe head Andrew House claimed on Tuesday. He justified the handheld to MCV as a way to "learn more about what the consumer wanted" rather than as a replacement for the original model. While House admitted the Go faced poor sales, he contended that the sales themselves didn't matter as much as the lessons learned.
Speakal on Tuesday brought out its latest iPod dock, the iCrystal. The dock sports a unique design, with two separated spheres that house the speakers and an ambient light that covers the speakers in a soft blue light. The dock has touch controls for changing volume levels and tracks, along with a small remote control.
Less than a day after the event, Apple has posted two different video versions of the 2010 WWDC keynote. On Apple's website is a streaming version, encoded in three different quality levels for QuickTime. Via the iTunes Store people can now download a podcast version, viewable either in iTunes or on an iPhone, iPod, iPad or Apple TV.

Apple is very close to releasing the iTunes 9.2 update, say developers. A new seed is reportedly labeled a "Golden Master" copy, signifying that the software is essentially complete. The upgrade from beta is likely not coincidental, as Apple yesterday released a gold master of iOS 4 to developers.
In an unexpected turn, Apple has announced that it is renaming the iPhone OS. It will now simply be called iOS, reflecting its use on devices like the iPad. As previously revealed, the iOS 4 firmware brings several important changes including multitasking, app folders, a universal inbox and e-mail threading. Newly disclosed though is integration with the iPhone 4 retina display, and updated Camera and Photos apps.
Training heart rate monitor maker Polar has introduced one of the few Nike+ transmitters outside of Nike in the WearLink+. The band is compatible with the Nike+ SportBand and Nike+iPod Sport Kit but does more than track pace. It straps around a user's chest and brings heart rate monitoring for the first time to the two existing Nike+ offerings.


Google this week modified its mobile search engine to now include search results of apps from the Android Market and the iPhone App Store. Above the regular search results, direct links to the app on both online app stores will appear. The search also includes basic app details such as its price, rating and publisher.

Apple is actively removing apps with widgets from the App Store, claims developer Russell Ivanovic. The coder says he was recently called by an Apple representative and told his own title, MyFrame, was being pulled because the company is looking to remove any app that presents widgets. Before it disappeared, My Frame was capable of displaying an extra layer of data on top of photos, in a manner similar to the Mac Dashboard or Microsoft's Gadgets layer in Windows.
Bare Bones has updated its information organizer, Yojimbo 2.2. The software stores information across numerous filetypes, like PDFs, images, web archives, rich text notes, bookmarks and both passwords and serial numbers. It uses tags, collections and labels for fast organization and also supports search, browse and Spotlight searches. It supports MobileMe for syncing multiple computers to its data. It has a quick input command for note taking and an on-screen drop box tab supporting drag and drop.
Chillingo has unveiled two new games for the iPhone and iPod touch, Assault Squadron and Pirate’s Treasure. Assault Squadron is a space-age shooter that places players in a tactical combat forced designed to defeat alien invaders. The game provides four different ships, each with their own abilities, as well as an upgradeable weapons system that can be used to enhance the power of the Vulcan Cannons, Spiral Grenades, Torpedo Missiles, or Tri-Vortex Bombs.
Sony has introduced the PIIQ series of fashion-oriented headphones featuring a variety of styles and designs. The flagship Marqii headphones are built with a pink and black color scheme and a large, over-ear design which houses 40mm drivers.
Slacker has announced that that its v2.0 app for the iPhone has been approved by Apple and added to the App Store. The update now allows users to cache channels for offline listening or minimal dependence on 3G networks when a Wi-Fi connection is unavailable.

Audio specialist iHome has launched the iP49, a new portable speaker system for iPhones and iPods. The unit folds for travel, but is still said to produce 20W of output using four neodymium compression drivers. Equalizer controls improve bass, treble or simulated 3D effects. Clock functions allow listeners to set separate weekday and weekend alarms, as well as custom snooze times, and toggles for DST and gradual wake or sleep.
Onkyo has introduced three new receivers, each featuring support for 3D video and iPhone/iPod connection. The TX-NR1008, TX-NR808, and TX-NR708 offer an Ethernet port for integration with home networks, enabling DLNA streaming and access to additional content such as Pandora.
iHome on Tuesday shipped its iP39 dock for iPods and iPhones for the kitchen. It features a stainless steel finish to match other kitchenwares, and has two built-in cooking timers along with a retractable docking station. There is also an easy-wipe control panel and a magnetic remote control that can sit on the fridge door.
Apple has been considering hiding solar collectors within some of its handhelds, a recent patent application suggests. Described in the document is a way of weaving solar cells into a display, thereby keeping them off of a device's outside surfaces and still allowing easy reach by light. The technology involves sandwiching the cells underneath glass and touch-sensitive layers.

Jumsoft has launched an update to its budgeting software, Money. The financial management and budgeting tool allows users to track transactions across bank accounts and trading accounts. Users can make budget plans and monitor results. The utility can track portfolios, graphing quote history and variations of major world indices or a portfolio's market value. It can also schedule transactions, create invoices and generate income and expense reports.
Chillingo has announced a new licensing agreement with Fox Digital Entertainment for publishing official iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad games based on the upcoming sci-fi film, Predators. The game will be developed by Angry Mob Games, and is expected to be available in time for the film's theatrical release on July 9th. Johnny Coghlan, Head of Publishing at Chillingo has expressed his excitement in the project, “The film’s fast-paced, suspenseful action provides the perfect environment for thrilling gameplay design.” No official details for the game have been announced yet, but a short teaser trailer has been posted on YouTube.
People should be able to jailbreak the second-generation iPod touch when iPhone 4.0 is released in the near future, says iH8sn0w. The independent coder has been working on iPhone 4.0 jailbreaks since early April, and is now teasing a beta sn0wbreeze 1.6 hack with support for the older Touch model. The final v1.6 release should come after Apple officially launches the updated iPhone firmware, likely in tandem with upgraded hardware.

SubRosaSoft.com has released an update to its drive duplication software for the Mac, CopyCatX 5.0. The software uses sector copying and can quickly create an exact duplicate of a hard drive, including a Mac OS X boot drive, or an iPod. It can also clone Boot Camp drives and Windows, TiVo and Linux drives. It uses proprietary resizing technology on HFS Plus drives to recover lost space after a cloning.
